چکیده

The BC-523A detector is a boron-10-loaded liquid scintillation detector that is sensitive to not only fast neutrons and gamma rays, but also to thermal neutrons. This detector has recently attracted the attention of several researchers and has shown promise for neutron spectroscopy. Several efforts have been made to accurately characterize this detector for several neutron and gamma-ray energies. In this paper, we show, for the first time, that neutron capture pulses can be visually distinguished from neutron scattering pulses by using an offline digital pulse shape discrimination method based on charge integration. In addition, new Monte Carlo simulation and measurement results for time to capture are compared and reasonable agreement is achieved. This work has applications in fields such as nuclear safeguards, nuclear nonproliferation, and national security. & 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Digital pulse-shape discrimination of fast neutrons and γ rays

Discrimination of the detection of fast neutrons and γ rays in a liquid scintillator detector has been investigated using digital pulse-processing techniques. An experimental setup with a 252Cf source, a BC-501 liquid scintillator detector, and a BaF2 detector was used to collect waveforms with a 100 Ms/s, 14 bit sampling ADC. Three identical ADC’s were combined to increase the sampling frequen...

Pulse-shape Discrimination for Identification of Neutron Sources Using the Bc-501a Liquid Scintillator

Fast and accurate identification of neutron sources is very important in nuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards applications. Commonly, the identification of neutron spectra relies on unfolding procedures, which requires the solution of an ill-posed problem. In this paper, we present a new application of an existing technique, which can be used for neutron source identification w...

Digital Pulse Shape Analysis with Phoswich Detectors to Simplify Coincidence Measurements of Radioactive Xenon

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty establishes a network of monitoring stations to detect radioactive xenon in the atmosphere from nuclear weapons testing. One such monitoring system is the Automated Radioxenon Sampler/Analyzer (ARSA) developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which uses a complex arrangement of separate beta and gamma detectors to detect beta-gamma coincidences...

Neutron generator burst timing measured using a pulse shape discrimination plastic scintillator with silicon photomultiplier readout

An EJ-299-34 plastic scintillator with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout was used to measure the fast neutron output of a pulsed Thermo-Fisher A-325 Deuterium-Tritium sealed tube neutron generator (STNG). The SiPM signals were handled by a prototype digital pulse processing system, based on a free-running analogue to digital converter feeding a digital signal processor (DSP). Pulse shape d...

Pulse-shape discrimination of scintillation from alpha and beta particles with liquid scintillator and Geiger-mode multipixel avalanche diodes

A successfull application of Geiger-mode multipixel avalanche diodes (GMAPDs) for pulse-shape discrimination in alpha-beta spectrometry using organic liquid scintillator is described in this paper. Efficient discrimination of alpha and beta components in the emission of radioactive isotopes is achieved for alpha energies above 0.3 MeV. The ultra-compact design of the scintillating detector help...
